The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, and burned the temple of Solomon, in 586 B.C.
But before they invaded Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar’s forces attacked the nearby city of Lachish.
In the 1930s the British archaeologist James Leslie Starkey excavated Lachish.
There he discovered several ostraca, which are pottery fragments with writing on them.
These inscriptions, known as the Lachish Letters, included a message to the commander of the fortress of Lachish.
The writer says he can no longer see the signal fires at the outpost of Azekah.
This would suggest the Babylonians had overrun Azekah and were on their way to Lachish.
The desperate poignancy of the last holdouts at Lachish illuminates Jeremiah 34:7.
“The king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and Azekah, for these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.”
