Before debating free will, you have to start with the Calvinist view of God.
In Calvinism, God doesn’t merely permit or allow events to happen—He decrees them.

The Bible says she took them to the roof and hid them.
“Then,” we read in Joshua 2:15, “she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall.”
Huh? How does a person live “in” a wall?
Skeptics in academic departments Europe and America insisted the biblical text must be garbled or mistaken.
Their point was that people live in houses with walls, but not somehow “in” the walls themselves.
Archaeologists have subsequently discovered a type of wall in Jericho and elsewhere in Israel called casemate walls. (See image below.)
Casemate walls are two parallel walls, built some distance apart, allowing for grain and weapons to be stored between the two walls.
Casemate walls could accommodate defenders of the city, their weapons and supplies to help ward off attacks on a city.

The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, and burned the temple of Solomon, in 586 B.C.
But before they invaded Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar’s forces attacked the nearby city of Lachish.
In the 1930s the British archaeologist James Leslie Starkey excavated Lachish.
There he discovered several ostraca, which are pottery fragments with writing on them.
These inscriptions, known as the Lachish Letters, included a message to the commander of the fortress of Lachish.
The writer says he can no longer see the signal fires at the outpost of Azekah.
This would suggest the Babylonians had overrun Azekah and were on their way to Lachish.

“The king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and Azekah, for these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.”
