We all more or less understand the source of inflation: government spending, the Fed printing money, and entitlements. The cost of living in the US between 1920 and 2020 increased by a factor of 12. In the same period entitlements increased from 0.5% of the population to about 40%. Clearly, the number of non-contributors in society has an effect.
But we likely overlook another source in the general division of labor. Let's modify "non-contributors" to non-producers. Between 1920 and 2020 the ratio of white collar workers to blue collar increased from 1:2 to nearly 4:1. Let that sink in.
We can't all talk and write for a living, making from 3 to 10 times the money of the one who produces the necessities. No economic system can withstand that before the ship of society begins to creak under the weight.
